A DOT inspection checklist for commercial trucks

A DOT inspection checklist is the fastest way to walk into your annual inspection ready to pass. The inspection follows the federal standard, and most failures come down to the same handful of systems. Here is what to look at before you bring the truck in.

Brakes

Brakes are the most common failure. Check lining thickness, listen for air leaks, and watch the push rod travel when someone presses the pedal. Out-of-adjustment brakes are a top out-of-service item, so this is the first place to look. If anything is marginal, get the brakes handled before the inspection.

Lights

Walk the truck and the trailer. Every required lamp should work, and the trailer plug should be clean and tight. Lighting is one of the most common violations and one of the cheapest to prevent. A bad ground or a corroded 7-way plug is usually behind the repeat failures we see, which is the kind of thing our lighting and electrical work clears up for good.

Tires and wheels

Measure tread against the legal minimum, look for cuts and bulges in the sidewalls, and make sure no wheel fasteners are loose or missing. A flat-spotted or cord-showing tire is an easy fail.

Steering and suspension

Look for play in the steering and for cracked or shifted springs. These are safety items the inspector checks closely.

Under the truck

A quick look underneath catches a lot: leaks, the exhaust and fuel systems, the frame, and the coupling devices that keep a trailer attached.

The best part of bringing it to us is simple. If the checklist turns up a problem, we fix it in the same visit. Book a DOT inspection and we will handle the inspection and the repair under one roof.
